At Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Our unique affordable financing model, paired with hands-on support, empowers families to build brighter futures through homeownership.

Whether it’s through building a home alongside volunteers, taking financial education courses, or receiving long-term support, we partner with families every step of the way. Habitat doesn’t give away houses—we offer affordable mortgages to qualifying families, allowing your monthly payments to directly help other families in need.

Our Homeownership Program will give you the knowledge you need to buy a home with confidence.

Classes include understanding your credit score, how to save for a down payment, budgeting for home repairs, what to expect at a home closing, and more.

Families are selected based on a number of criteria.

We believe that everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home. To carry out our vision, we partner with individuals and families from construction through closing. Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity will help you learn to budget your income, understand the responsibilities of homeownership, and provide home care advice and tips.

Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, age, handicap, religion, national origin, family status, material status, or because all or part of a family’s income is derived from public assistance programs or if the family applicant has exercised any Consumer Credit Protection Act Rights.

Housing Need

Your current residence is structurally unsafe or lacking.
Your current residence has inadequate or unsafe plumbing, electrical, or heating.
Your residence does not meet minimum safety standards.
Your residence does not provide adequate sleeping space for family members.
Your residence costs more than 50% of your family’s gross income.

Affordability

Your financial situation indicates you can afford to purchase a new or completely refurbished Habitat home with favorable financing.
Your financial situation shows you can make monthly mortgage payments including principal, interest (if any), real estate taxes, and homeowner’s insurance.
Your finances demonstrate that your budget allows you to sustain monthly mortgage payments.
You meet a maximum income eligibility for Goodhue County based on family size.

Participation

Your family must agree to help build your home by working with other Habitat volunteers.
Your family agrees to volunteer up to 200 hours per adult family member, not to exceed 400 hours for the family.
Your family agrees to complete required volunteer hours assisting with construction tasks if possible, or helping to fulfill other Habitat needs.
You family agrees to complete all your required volunteer hours before taking ownership to your home.

When the application window is open, families can apply for consideration. Applications include proof of income, current housing details, and other documentation to confirm eligibility.

Contact us to request an in-person or virtual information session. These sessions cover everything you need to know about applying, partnering with Habitat, and what to expect throughout the process. Translators can be arranged for non-English speakers.

Partner with Habitat

Once approved, families begin their Habitat journey by completing financial education courses and earning sweat equity hours. These hours may include building your own home, working on other Habitat projects, or volunteering in our office.
