Habitat for Humanity is an international ecumenical Christian housing ministry and grassroots organization that works to provide simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with low-income households in need of adequate housing. Habitat homes are built by partner families who contribute hundreds of hours of sweat equity together with many volunteers supplemented by donated materials and contributed funds. Habitat then sells these homes to the partner families at a price that includes no profit and is financed with a long-term, interest-free mortgage. We serve families who would otherwise in all likelihood never become homeowners. Habitat’s vision is for a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH) is part of an international, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian effort to build affordable homes in partnership with low-income families. In addition to strengthening the communities in which we build by opening homeownership to families who otherwise might never own a home, Habitat for Humanity provides an opportunity for volunteers from all walks of life to foster community development by collectively sharing their talents and resources as they work side by side with our partner families constructing Habitat homes. Since its incorporation in 1993, Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity has built 28 homes in our service area with two more homes planned for 2012 as well as supported the construction of 59 homes in Central America through our tithe program. All of the homes we have built since 2004 have been rated Five-Star or higher Energy Star homes with expected average annual heating costs of $350. We are also planning to complete four to five exterior home repair projects in 2012 (see ABWK link to the left) and are currently accepting applications.
Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity’s service area includes all of Goodhue County (except Pine Island) plus Lake City and Mazeppa in Wabasha County. Preference in the selection of partner families will be given to applicants residing in the community in which GCHFH is planning to build and secondarily to applicants residing in GCHFH’s service area.
